An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.

An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

I typically enjoy King’s books and was excited for this summer read. What a disappointment! Did the same person who wrote “The Stand” “Carrie” and “The Shining” author this book? I’m not so sure! Also people read to get away from the political insanity of today’s world, which makes King’s trite, and frankly pathetic attempts at mocking the current administration, so annoying! I bought a thriller not a book about how much King dislikes Trump. Tell me something I didn’t know!

The latest in the Bill Hodges series, this book was spookier and more full of twists and turns. I wholeheartedly recommend it to SK fans old and new!

Dear Mr. King, while I enjoy your books, your style of writing, your imagination, your talent, and your story telling abilities I do not enjoy being insulted. I realize many of us do not agree especially on politics but as for this fantasy/horror/thriller book did you really need to insert your feelings and insult your readers who voted for our - yes our - President? Taking cheap shots at your fans who voted for Trump is a bit of a slap in the face from your favorite author. While I respect your feelings and your right to your opinions and your views why don’t you respect the people who love your work but do not agree with your political views? You can take pot shots at the President all you like but why take advantage of “celebrity” position in the literary world to insult your fans? A “celebrity” is simply a position which is held by someone who other people enjoy their acting, music, books, etc. it bestows no super powers upon you, you are still just as human and bleed just as red as the rest of us. Sir, I have much respect for you, and while I realize you may not care, and may never read this review I am putting it here anyway, yes some of that respect was lost when I bought your new book, excited to read it, stayed up a couple nights in a row even though I had my own artworks to work on, only to find myself and my family insulted by my absolute favorite writer, a writer I look up to. A writer who I have a fan art painting of that hangs over my desk, this painting hangs opposite a photo of our president and our First Lady. The Outsider is a good book, it is by far not your best work, in fact Duma Key was much better, why do I bring up Duma Key? Well I am from Florida, not far from where the story takes place, and it’s also a newer book, not as old as some of them, it has a similar style at least in my view so I am able to compare the two. I digress, this is not about Duma Key, it is about The Outsider, which reminds me greatly of Desperation, it almost feels like the two are either 1) connected 2) similar stories, maybe a bit too similar. Are we dealing with the same sort of creature? The story feels a bit rushed, and if I may be completely honest it simply feels like a filler novel, a quick buck, a familiar story we already know, re-written with a new cover and a new name, a borrowed idea from a previous novel. I think you can do better. And as strongly as you feel about our president I think you could have done better without throwing around insults to many of your readers. Sure the president is fair game, but us? That’s a bit low. Not that a few less sales will matter much to you, they would to me as a small business owner scraping to get by at times, but maybe have a bit more respect for many many of your readers. I’m not saying I will not read your books my skin is much thicker than that, I will absolutely continue to buy and read your books, I don’t care how you feel about politics your opinion on this matter, matters not, it especially does not matter more because of who you are. I’m just saying, perhaps think twice before insulting your biggest fans. Some of us very much adore your work, even though we think you are wrong with your view on guns, politics, our president, etc. while you sit in your large gated house protected by your walls, many of us do not. Yours, Susan

Started out great. Couldn’t put it down. Then it was page after page of recap and rehash, followed by a very unsatisfying ending with 0 explanation. King isn’t known for the destination, but rather the journey. But this was really disappointing.

Steven King takes the vintage theme of the childhood boogeyman to page turning horror. Check under bed after every chapter.

A compelling collection of villains, some obvious, others less so. I enjoyed the unfolding story. Another SK classic - and I mean that in the best way.
